Hi to all the Year 8 Geographers.
Here is the homework task as promised. Please complete the table and hand it in with any work you have completed on flooding by next lesson, thankyou.
Causes of flooding
Many rivers have always flooded. This is due to natural causes such as relief, rock types (see Diagram B on p 46 NKGF) and extremes of climate.
However, many of these rivers and many others not previously prone to flooding, now flood more frequently. There is growing concern that the increase in floods is also due to human actions rather than just natural causes.
YOUR TASK:
lOOK AT THE LIST OF POSSIBLE CAUSES OF FLOODING BELOW AND DECIDE WHETHER THEY ARE DUE TO HUMAN ACTION OR NATURAL CAUSES. PLACE THEM INTO A TABLE LIKE THE ONE SHOWN TO YOU IN CLASS. YOU NEED TWO HEADINGS...ONE FOR NATURAL CAUSES AND ONE FOR HUMAN ACTIONS.
Possible causes of flooding:-
*Very heavy rain, especially thunderstaorms.
*Continuous rain over several days so the ground becomes saturated
* Deforestation causing the water to reach the rivers more quickly as the trees to do not take up excess water
*Steep slopes causing excess water to flow downhill rapidly
*Concrete and tarmac surfaces making it difficult for the rainwater to soak into the ground
*Impermeable rock meaning the water has to flow over ground rather than soaking into it
* Increasing number of settlements built on the land adjacent to the river (on the flood plain).
EXTENSION TASK:
Try to add any other causes that YOU can think of to either the natural or human causes.
Good Luck
