Four - figure grid references

•The aim of this lesson is to give you an introduction to grid references.

•Grid references like latitude and longitude help you to find places and features on a map.

•You will need to follow NKGF pages 132-133 closely to complete all of the tasks.

Map C on p133 NKGF
•Look at map C on page 133.
•It is a map of the British Isles.
•Notice the blue lines that run from north to south and west to east.

•These lines are called GRID LINES.
The grid lines make up the GRID SQUARES that you can see on the map
•You can use the squares to pinpoint features and places on the map.
•Of course though you need to know how to give the POSITION of each grid square.
•For this you need to use GRID REFERENCES.
•A GRID REFERENCE gives the position of a grid square.

SO HOW DO YOU GIVE A GRID REFERENCE?
•Go back to page 132 of NKGF and look at DIAGRAM A.
•The diagram which represents a simple map has the blue lines indicating GRID SQUARES and map symbols in selected squares to represent features in real life.

•Make a LARGER copy of diagram A (about half an A4 page)
•Make sure than you have accurate squares.
•Include the features, grid squares and numbers that are at the end of each grid line.

•Now look at the shaded YELLOW grid square in the centre of the diagram.
•You will need to give the grid reference for this GRID SQUARE.
•You need to give the number that represents the line to the left of the yellow square first.
•Follow the line to the left of the square to the bottom of the map and you will find the number 04 (notice it has two digits...0 and 4)

•Then find the line underneath the YELLOW square.
•Follow this line to the right of the map and you will find the number 12 (two digits again1 and 2)
•These two numbers are then placed together to give the FOUR FIGURE GRID REFERENCE for the YELLOW grid square.
•The four figure grid reference is 0412.

Grid reference tips!
•Notice where there is a single digit. That is less than 10 we put a zero in front.....04.
•This means we have a reference that has 4 digits in all......0412.
•This is called a FOUR FIGURE GRID REFERENCE.

Remembering???
•So how will you remember which number to put first?
•The easiest way is to remember the two GRID LINES as the letter L.
•If you were to write the letter L you would draw the I line first followed by the __ line.

So can you remember???
•All you need to remember then is to follow the first line (vertical ) down until you find the first number .
•Then take the second line (horizontal) line to the right until you find the second number.
•Remember you must end up with FOUR DIGITS for a four figure grid reference.

Your turn!!!
•Now look at the features on diagram A.

•You will see map symbols that represent a church (church square), camp site (tent square), bridge (bridge square), and picnic site (picnic square).

•Make a simple table with two columns.....one for the symbol and the second column for the four-figure grid reference.

Complete the table...
•Now draw the four symbols on the left hand side of the table and add in the four-figure grid reference to the right.
•Remember to think of the letter L. Vertical line first followed by horizontal .

Complete the map...
•You will now need to look at the symbols on the inside back cover of NKGF to put the following map symbols in the given grid squares:
•Bus or coach station in grid square 0513
•Public telephone in grid square 0312
•Nature reserve in grid square 0413.

Going further...
•Look closely again at map C on page 133from NKGF.
•You will need to complete the following activities from page 133:
Activity 1 – write the name of the town with its grid reference
•Activity 3 a, 3b
•Activity 4
• Activity 6

And finally...
•You should now have a clear understanding of four-figure grid references.
•You should know how to give a grid reference and find features using given four figure grid references.

•You should now REVISE all of your MAP SKILLS as we will move onto the next module when you return to school.

Good luck
Ms Butler
