Good morning to all Year 8 Geographers
I hope you are all well.
You should now have completed the map skills work on direction and distances/scale.
If you have not done then you need to get into the habit of home study very quickly. See my advice that I posted for Year 7 this morning if you need some tips!
So the next assignment is based on MAP SYMBOLS. Please read all the following instructions and complete on A4 lined paper or word processed.
Year 8 Geography Assignment ‘Map Symbols’
The TITLE for this assignment is MAP SYMBOLS
Remember to put a margin on the left-hand side of your page and give your work a date and title. Always UNDERLINE with pencil and ruler.
The AIM of this assignment is to give you some understanding of the value of map symbols. How useful are they?
In order to achieve this aim you need to ask yourself the following questions:
• What are map symbols?
• Why do we use map symbols?
Task 1
Think about symbols generally. We find symbols all around us. What does each symbol represent?
• A piece of information?
• A particular brand of clothing, footwear etc?
• A particular place or organisation?
Find 5 symbols that represent things/ information. (You can look around you at home...how many of you have Nike trainers? )
Draw each symbol accurately and state what each represents.
Now you need to extend your current knowledge to looking at MAP symbols in particular.
READ page 130 of New Key Geography Foundations (NKGF) and look closely at the diagrams.
Task 2
After reading copy and complete the following sentences
A map symbol is ....................................................................................................................................................
Map symbols are useful because they ...................................................................................................................
Task 3
Look at MAP F on page 131 of NKGF.
It is a fictitious map of Trinity Island
Make a larger copy of the map for yourself (about half an A4 page).
Now go to the VERY back of the book... open up the back cover so that you see
‘KEY for Ordnance Survey 1:50,000’. Look closely at the range of map symbols.
You will need to use these map symbols to complete your map of Trinity Island.
You will need to use COLOUR to complete your map accurately.
On your copy of Trinity Island mark the following features with the CORRECT map symbols according to the KEY for Ordnance Survey 1:50,000.
• A main road to connect Gorton and Bayhead
• A railway line to connect Gorton to Asham
• A principal (major) railway station at Gorton
• A smaller railway station at Asham
• A road generally less than 4m wide between Gorton and Calder
• A bus station at Bayhead
• A viewpoint at Big Hill
• A mixed wood between Bayhead and Asham
• Next to your map you need to add a key. The symbols on the key MUST MATCH exactly the symbols you have used on your map (including colour).
Good luck
Hope to see you all soon
