Mid Year Vacation Work

1) The English Republic

Please read pages 44 and 45 of your textbook. Here you will begin to explore how England changed after the King's downfall and execution. You will discover that during this time period there was no King and Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector. You will complete Exercise 9.1. Please ensure you write all of your answers in complete sentences. This aids revision later on, trust me!

2) The Commonwealth and its Enemies

Here you need to read pages 45 and 46. You must complete Exercise 9.2. Here you will answer all questions in full, stating clearly both the facts and opinions from the information.

3) Puritan England

You will read pages 46-47. You will discover that England changed greatly during the years of the Commonwealth (1649-1660). England became a very Puritan country. Your job will be to explore all the ways in which England changed.

Exercise 9.3 requires you to look at two pictures. You will need to decide which was drawn by a supporter of the Monarchy and which was drawn by one of Cromwell's supporters. You must be prepared to give good reasons for your answers. Please follow the instructions closely to get the most out of this exercise.

Exercise 9.4 examines the ways in which the Theatre changed during this period. You will need to use the text and sources to find the answers. Again, make sure you write out the whole sentence. It is wise here to print your answers as these will come up in the March examination.


4) The Research Based Project (Deadline: February 28th)

For your research project this term you are asked to produce a piece of work on the life and work of Oliver Cromwell. You are expected to produce 1500 words and use a variety of websites and books to complete this. You must try to write as much of this work in your own words as possible.

Remember to include the following
i) A title page
ii) A contents page
iii) Number each of your pages
iv) Include a bibliography (list of all books and websites you have used).

In order to help you complete this work in your own words please answer the following questions in full detail. Remember to include text, pictures and of course aim to write as much of it in your own words as possible.

a) What was Oliver Cromwell's early life like?
b) Why was Oliver Cromwell able to become the leader of the Parliamentarians?
c) What kind of army leader was Oliver Cromwell?
d) What was very special about Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army?
e) How did Oliver Cromwell change England when he became Lord Protector?
f) How will Oliver Cromwell be remembered: a hero or villain?
