LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
3th November 2009
Dear Parents and Pupils,
The EBIS community has had an eventful week! We began with Mr. Bennett’s assembly on Sunday during which we revised important school rules and heard a story about the young man who could not control his temper. On Wednesday, I called another school assembly so I could share with students that they would not be coming to school for safety reasons for two weeks. Our physical inability to meet will not, however, stop the learning process that has begun. Below, I have shared with you the distance learning strategy that I have put into place. The special EBIS forum that you will read about below will ensure that students can communicate as a class from home. The forum, together with the interactive lessons, review sheets, and international tolerance day projects, ensure that our students will continue along the path of academic excellence that we have started without falling behind. Stay healthy and study hard!
School Hours
When we return, school hours will be 7:30 until 3:00 from Sundays until Wednesdays. On Thursdays, school will end at 2:40. Please note that on Saturday the 14th and the 21st, we will hold special school hours from 7:30 until 2:00. These days will be used to review the material that students covered at home.
EBIS Online Forum
A forum, like a classroom, is a medium in which the public may discuss an issue, ask questions or express opinions. Our online forum allows students to continue to discuss, ask and express, as if they were in the classroom. The forum also has the added benefit of improving students’ writing skills because they will communicate in writing, rather than orally. Students, please log into ebis.forumotion.net and register a free account. At that point, you will be able to respond to your teachers and post onto your year’s forum(s). Happy posting!
Home Study CD
Review Sheets
Teachers have included on your CD all the review sheets that are available on the website. It is important to complete all of the review sheets and email them to your teachers before beginning the interactive lessons that cover new material.
Interactive Lessons
Interactive lessons are available on the CD in your home study folder. These interactive lessons have been designed on the smart board and recorded both audibly and visually. Students will hear their teachers’ voices as they see the lesson take place live on the smart board.
International Tolerance Day Project
International Tolerance Day is celebrated on the 16th of November. Students were set to begin their projects next week. Students have been assigned a country to research. The project will be integrated through most of your curricula and will be assigned and graded by different teachers.
EBIS Read-a-thon
Students have in their home study folder a turtle for the EBIS Read-A-Thon. Students are highly encouraged to READ, READ, READ! Please complete one Turtle for each book that you have read and submit it to your Literacy teacher when you return. I will be looking to see which castle has read the most books over these two weeks!
Baker Books
Also in your home study folder, you have received a catalogue from Baker Books International School Book Club. This is the first of many opportunities you will have this year to supplement your home library. Home libraries are essential factors of the home-school connection to strengthen literacy. Ordering books is easy! Explore the catalogue and choose the books you want. The white order form in the back has the book prices calculated in Egyptian pounds. Please fill in the form and place it, along with the appropriate fees in a sealed envelope. On the envelope, please put your child’s full name, year, and castle. If you have more than one child, please put each child’s requests in a separate envelope.
Teacher Emails
Please use the attached teacher emails to submit assignments only. All questions or comments should be posted on the school forum.
House Points
England has taken the lead with 231 points. Wales has moved up to second place with 197 points. Good Job! Scotland is still in 3rd place with 196 points, only one point away from Wales. Northern Ireland students need to pull together as they have fallen from 1st to last place with 183 points. You can still earn house points this week by reading and sending in your Read-a-Thon turtles.
I hope our students take every advantage of this opportunity to produce quality work.
Yours in Education,
Rania El-Sioufi, Director
