Good aftetrnoon to all Year 7 Geographers...

You should by now know the topics that you need to revise for your examination in January.

You will find a few tasks below to help you with your revision. I will let you know at a later date how you can check your answers.

Don’t forget you can use the same ideas as the vocabulary for the English...why not try making index cards or using the ‘look, say, cover, write check’ method for the geographical vocabulary.

Section 1 Studying Geography
Task 1
Match the words to the definitions
Physical geography is.........................
Human geography is...........................
Environmental geography is.....................
Task 2
We looked at atlases in class and especially at political and physical maps. Using the above definition to aid your memory, it should be clear to you that a physical map is related to things found in nature (e.g rivers).
Think back to the map that we looked at to show the countries of Africa. This is a political map. Can you therefore define what a political map is?
At the back of the atlas there is extra information about countries, but not in the form of maps. How does the atlas present this information?
Task 3
Finish the sentences to define the vocabulary associated with human geography:-
Population is....................................................................
Settlement is.....................................................................
Transport links are.................................................................
Task 4
Finish the sentences to define the vocabulary associated with physical geography:-
A desert is...............................................................................................
Soil is.......................................................................................................
A forest is.................................................................................................
Section 2 Plate Tectonics
Task 5
You have studied the layers of the earth as part of your study of the movement of the plates.
Take the information below and try to match the name of the layer with its temperature and what it is made of. You could put the information into a table or draw lines to match the correct information to its layer name.
5000°C 3000°C Up to 600°C 4000°C
Crust mantle solid core liquid core
Melted rock solid rock solid metals liquid metals
Task 6
Look closely at the map of Pangaea that you produced in class. Try to explain in your own words why scientists believe that the land on the earth was once all joined together like this. What is the evidence you can see from just looking at the map that modern day continents were once all joined together like this?

Task 7
Draw and explain movement at a CONSTRUCTIVE plate boundary and a DESTRUCTIVE plate boundary. What are the main differences between these two types of plate boundary.
Task 8
Draw and label the main parts of a volcano.
Explain why secondary cones may be formed on the side of a volcano.

Happy New Year to you all
Ms Butler
