Good morning to all the Year 7 Goegraphers

I was sorry not to see you today so here is the next assignment that I would like you to attempt at home. You can complete the work on A4 lined paper.

Please read all the information and instructions carefully. Remember to take a look at the tips for home study if you are struggling to get organised etc.

What are tectonic plates?

The TITLE for this assignment is TECTONIC PLATES
Remember to put a margin on the left-hand side of your page and give your work a date and title.
Always UNDERLINE with pencil and ruler.

The AIM for this assignment is for you to understand how the STRUCTURE of the CRUST itself is also an important factor in causing volcanoes and earthquakes to occur.

In order to achieve this aim you need to ask yourself the following questions:
• What is the CRUST like?
• How does the crust move?

You will need to refer to the DIAGRAMS on page 30 of NEW KEY GEOGRAPHY INTERACTIONS (NKGI)

YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND BY NOW THAT:
*The CRUST is the very outside layer of the earth on which we live.

•The heat from INSIDE the earth can affect the outer layer as the heat escapes outwards (Remember to liken the escape of heat to a boiling pan on a stove)

So why does this HEAT have such a dramatic effect on the CRUST?
The answer to this lies in the STRUCTURE of the crust......READ ON

The earth’s crust
*The earth’s crust is not all one piece, but is broken into several enormous sections called PLATES.
•These PLATES fit together on the surface of the earth like pieces of a JIGSAW.

•LOOK at MAP B on page 30 of NKGI. It shows how the crust is divided into PLATES.
Each plate is marked on its BOUNDARY (edge) by the RED LINES you see on the map.
* Some of the plates are as large as continents while others are much smaller.

• Look at the NAMES of the PLATES. What do you notice about the name of some of the larger plates and their location in the world?

•Underneath the crust (in the mantle), the rock is so hot that it remains molten (partly melted) and can flow like treacle.

•The plates float on this layer and move about very, very slowly – just a few millimetres a year.

•Each plate moves in its own direction. The DIRECTION of MOVEMENT is shown by the RED ARROWS on the map.

Task 1
•Make a copy of Map B from page 30 of NKGI
•Colour the LAND green and the seas/oceans BLUE.
•Mark on the map the boundaries (edges) of the plates in RED and the DIRECTION of movement with RED ARROWS.

•Number each MAJOR plate ( The plates with names)

•Add a KEY to your map. It needs to have MORE information than the key that is currently on the left-hand side of the map.

The following information should be on the KEY:
-The number of each plate and the name of the plate.
-The colour shading that represents the land and sea ( in small boxes)
-The red lines that represent the plate boundaries
-The red arrows that represent the direction of moving plates.

Task 2
•Write a sentence to define each geographical term below (use p30 and glossary of NKGI to help you)
•A plate is..................................................................................................................................................
•A plate boundary is....................................................................................................................................................
•Plate tectonics is...........................................................................................................................................

Have a good day
Ms Butler
