Edward VI 1547-1553

The Boy King
England ruled by a Regency (His Uncles the Duke of Somerset and Northumberland)
England became a very Protestant country (refer to notes/book)

Mary I (1553-1558)

Strong Catholic
Married to Philip of Spain
Known as Bloody Mary because of her harsh treatment of Protestants

Elizabeth I (1558-1603)

Never married
Strong ruler but believed in a balanced religious policy
Used portraits extensively
Elizabethan times known as a Golden Age for all their achievements

The Reformation describes the growing number of people who were unhappy with the Catholic Church (for a number of different reasons). Martin Luther, a German, began the Reformation in 1517 (read the information sheet). His ideas on worship became very popular throughout Europe. Edward VI's reign was very Protestant indeed (look at sheet). Although Henry VIII did break away from Rome in his heart he was still a Catholic. Mary I changed England back into a Catholic country during her reign.
